Where We Began
The African Australian Psychiatrist Association was founded in October 2016 during a memorable evening in Cairns, Northern Australia. Associate Professor Wole Akosile and Dr Fortunate Mchechesi, both passionate about advancing mental health care within African communities, shared a vision over dinner for a dedicated platform that would address the specific needs of African psychiatrists and patients.
Recognising the underrepresentation of African psychiatrists in Australia and the importance of cultural competence in mental health treatment, they decided to establish the association to foster a supportive network. The primary goals were to increase the number of African psychiatrists through encouragement and mentorship, enhance the representation of African culture within mental health services, and provide a support system for professionals navigating the unique challenges they face.
Since its inception, the African Australian Psychiatrist Association has grown to become a vital organisation dedicated to promoting mental health awareness, cultural inclusivity, and professional development among African psychiatrists and the broader community. Our founding story is rooted in a shared commitment to serve and uplift our communities, ensuring that mental health care is accessible, culturally sensitive, and empowering for all.
